Panda Wagon: Hatsune Miku extras, added in one click

Panda Wagon is a BigCommerce store selling licensed collaboration and limited-edition gaming and music gear. Add-On Picker was first built for this store, to offer matching extras on a product page without bending the store's product options to do it.

The challenge

Fans of a collaboration often look for more from the same series: headphones to listen with, a bag to carry their gear in. The team wanted to offer those extras right on the product page. They started with BigCommerce's built-in pick lists and ran into the limits of how pick lists are designed:

  • One extra per list. Shoppers can choose only one product from a pick list, so offering several extras meant adding more lists or making shoppers choose between them.
  • No sizes, colours or editions. Products with options can't go into a pick list, so accessories that come in several versions couldn't be offered without hidden copies of each one.
  • Not its own item. A picked product appears as an option on the main product rather than as its own line, which made orders harder to read and stock harder to follow.
  • A disjointed page. The extra showed up as one more option among the main product's own options, not as a clear "add this too" offer.

The team also tried two add-on style apps, but they were built for other jobs: ordering several quantities of one product's options, and building fixed bundles. Panda Wagon's extras are separate products, and the team didn't want to set up and maintain a bundle for every product.

What they set up

On the cubyfun × Hatsune Miku Pocket Music Keyboard Gift Box page (US$173), the team added two matching extras from the same series: the ASUS × Hatsune Miku TUF Gaming H1 Gen II headset (US$125) and the Moeyu × Hatsune Miku Song of the Tides ita-bag messenger bag (US$97). They searched for each product in the app, clicked Add and saved. There were no theme changes, and the same extras can be reused on any other Miku product.

The results

  • Shoppers see both extras as a checklist right above the quantity box, with images and prices.
  • Ticking the headset and the bag adds them in the same click as the keyboard. The cart shows three separate lines, US$173 + US$125 + US$97 = US$395, each with its own price and stock.
  • Every extra is its own line in the order, so the packing team sees exactly what to ship.
  • Sold-out extras are greyed out automatically, so shoppers can't order what the store can't ship.
  • Saved changes show on the storefront within about 10 seconds.

The store has more than 250 products, so the team uses the app's product list to plan the rest: they filter for visible, in-stock products without add-ons to see which pages to set up next.
